Alex Farrell prevailed at the United States Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit in Washington, DC on behalf of Sorna Corporation. In 2020, Sorna successfully protected the validity of its fundamental patent on medical recording methods and software at the United States Patent and Trademark Office Patent Trial and Appeal Board. Altamont Software appealed that decision to the Federal Circuit. In an order issued a few hours after briefing, the Court held that the USPTO made the correct decision, and that Sorna’s patent was indeed valid. Altamont asked the court to find that there was not substantial evidence to support the Board’s ruling, and the court refused to do so. The Court of Appeals granted costs to Sorna, and affirmed the ruling below on all grounds.
